About Bijou

The Bisexual Journal ("BiJou”) is the magazine of the registered society BiNe e. V. since 1994. It informs on the subject of bisexuality.

Three issues

History and Release Form

In October 1994 the first edition of the newspaper members appeared under the name “bix”. From the 4th Issue (July 1995) it is called “bijou” (bisexual journal). Until the 13th Edition (October 1997) was published the magazine every 3 months. In the following years the magazine seemed much more rare and very irregular.

In April 2001 issue 17 was published with an elaborate layout and a new motivated editorial team. The big break with promised new spending was only up to the second edition (Issue 18).

For years it has been rather quiet about the members' journal, but in June 2006 the wind of change is blowing: Frank took over the editorship alone and Martin the layout. Since then a magazine appears 1-2 times a year in a thicker expenditure (52-64 pages) in A4 format and in color with many pictures and photos.

The circulation is currently 1,000 copies, plus two online versions (a PDF document and HTML). An English online version is in work.

The current edition is bijou no. 24. The bijou is obtained automatically as a member by mail, you can order them, but you can also go to the website of Bine e. V. , purchase from selected book stores or at street festivals like the CSD.

Staff

The bijou editors changed more often in the years since the first publication: The editorial in 2001 had nine members: Angela, Hartmut, Karsten, Maik, Marta, Peter, Roman, Thomas and Wijnand. In issue 19 there was only one editor: Christoph. Since 2006 (Issue 20), Frank shares the task with Martin as editor in layout. Since 2011, Christoph rejoins the team.

Hartmut, Arnd and Frank do the online text versions. There are a lot of freelance writers of course, some of which are directly addressed by Frank, in part, to write something on their own. Finally there is illustrators such as lithium for the cover of bijou 22nd.

Articles

The subject, style, quality and scope of the articles in the bijou vary widely. There are political issues, theoretical issues, reports from around the world, reports from various bi-groups, reports from the BiNe-meetings, interviews with bisexuals, short stories, articles about movies, music and books, funny stuff like horoscopes and so on.

Most articles refer, of course, directly or indirectly, to bisexuality, but there are also related topics such as polyamory, homosexuality, transgender, intersex, BDSM, sex in general.

The bijou no. 20 contains a variety of shorter articles, a theoretical analysis, if every human being is bisexual, took a large space in the booklet.

The bijou no. 21 introduces the new bi-interviews and presents some photos of the photo workshops on the BiNe meeting.

The cover story of bijou no. 22 is yaoi – gay manga by and for women, moreover there were articles about bisexuality and the Church.

From bijou no. 23 on, the format of A5 was changed in A4. The cover story was “Bisexuality in Africa”, but there were also the following articles: the community ZEGG, since in 2009 there was a BiNe-meeting there, emos, the bisexual opera “The King Candaules”, the movie and play “dreamers”.

Issue 24 finally reported about the Bi-Con 2010 in London. More articles: Bisexuality in India, Bi-activist Robyn Ochs, a new Bi-symbol, Bi-asexuality, the tv-series Torchwood, The queer Femme, swinger clubs.
